U.S. Government Bonds Are Going To Be One Of The Great Shorts Of Our Time

One trade I’m looking forward to is shorting long-term U.S. government bonds. I am short them at the moment, although I don’t think this is my final short. I think that’s going to be one of the great secular plays of the next two or three decades when the final top comes.

I’m not convinced we’re at the final top, even though I am short. I think there’s going to be another opportunity either later this year or next, but U.S. government bonds are going to be one of the great shorts of our time.

The idea of lending money to the United States government in U.S. dollars for 30 years at 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 percent is mind-boggling to me. I cannot conceive of something so ludicrous.

I Am Long Silver And If It Goes Down, I Hope I Am Smart Enough To Buy More

Well, I’m long silver, and if it goes down more, I hope I’m smart enough to buy more. I didn’t particularly like seeing it spike, because anything that turns into a parabolic move has to be sold. And I don’t want to sell my silver. I want to own it 10 years from now. Fortunately, that spike did break, and I find that encouraging and bullish. - in IndexUniverse

Gold Is Just A Commodity

I know there are a lot of people who think it’s holy or mystical, but my reading is that everything is a commodity, ultimately, whether it’s IBM computers or Ford motor cars.

So, I consider gold a material, a substance, a commodity, a natural resource, a raw material — call it what you will. And it is affected by supply and demand, as it has been for several thousand years.

The mystics don’t like that, but unfortunately, I’m not a mystic. There have been many times when gold has been a terrible investment, no matter what’s been going on in the rest of the world.

The Unlocking Of 60 Mln Barrels Of Oil For Emergency Purposes. I Kept Thinking: This Must Be A Typo!

I find it embarrassing that they did it, and I find it embarrassing that the press even reported it. The world uses 86 million barrels of oil every day. So releasing 60 million barrels of oil is, what, two-thirds of a day of consumption? I kept thinking: This must be a typo! - in Index Universe

The Average Age Of Farmers In America Is 58 Years Old

I do not see any major new sources of supply. We know that the known reserves of oil continue to decline worldwide. We know that there are huge shortages of agriculture developing. I don’t know if you knew this, but the average age of farmers in America is 58 years old. In 10 years, they’re going to be 68, if they’re still alive.

Throughout the world, we have serious, maybe even catastrophic developments in agriculture, which is going to hurt us all over the next couple of decades. There will be setbacks and corrections along the way, but we have serious problems facing us in nearly all commodity areas.

All Markets, Bull or Bear, Have Contractions, Consolidations, Corrections

Well, all markets, bull or bear, have contractions, consolidations, corrections — call them what you will—and it looks as though that’s happened to some commodities now. It’s also happened to some stocks and some currencies. It’s the way the world works.

If you look at oil, for instance, it has gone down over 50 percent three or four different times since 1998. That’s what markets do, and they will continue to do that. I would expect we’re going to see many more periods like this in the next decade. I hope we do. Anything that goes straight up you know turns around and comes straight down eventually.

When Everybody Is On One Side Of The Boat, You Should Go To The Other Side

Mainly because everybody is so bearish on it, including me, I decided to go long the dollar. What I’ve found over the years of investing is that when everybody is on one side of the boat, you should go to the other side, at least for a while. So, I’ve gone to other side of the boat—I own the U.S. dollar, and we will see. I’m a very bad market-timer; I’m a horrible trader, so I’m sure I’m wrong. Video description: "Stephen Sackur talks to one of the world's most influential investors. Aged five, Jim Rogers was selling peanuts for profit; he became a hedge fund pioneer, a commodities trader and, years ago, he shifted much of his money, and his family too, out of the US and into Asia. But can even this maverick investor see new opportunities in a world riddled with economic uncertainty?

We need some brave leadership and knowledgeable decision making in the UK and elsewhere to bring back our manufacturing from China, enact agricultural and energy reforms and the necessary fiscal and monetary control/planning. Maybe then Jim would bring back some of his money to invest here given the opportunity."
